William Malcolm Chaulk, 89, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2024, at the Lionel Kelland Hospice in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sarah (Sally); his children, Edwin (Arlaine), Lisa (Terry), William (Caroline), Lori, Paul (Louise), and John (Laura); his stepchildren, Samantha (Brian), Lucyanne, and Timothy (Angela) and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.  William was predeceased by his parents, William and Maggie Chaulk;  his children's mother, Winnifred Chaulk; his brothers, Wesley, Stewart, Eric, and sisters, Lavina, Gladys, and Effie.

Bill was born on August 26, 1935, in Deer Lake, Newfoundland. Bill spent his early years in the logging camps on the west coast, which defined his physical approach to life. He moved to Lewisporte to take a job with Newfoundland Outfitting selling furniture, but quickly transitioned to managing the Valley Lounge in Norris Arm.

He later became a traveling salesman with Steers Wholesalers Limited. Always the entrepreneur, Bill partnered in B&B Printers, managed the Royal Hotel before transforming it into the Bluefin Lounge, and became a managing partner in the Brittany Inns and Chaulkie's in the Mall. He was also his own bouncer for his lounges, and many a rowdy patron found themselves summarily ejected by him after his signature one-arm leap over the bar to intercede in a fracas.

He officially retired in 1989, but could be found driving a school bus for several years and tending to his and Sally's exotic bird and goat farm in Brown's Arm. Many may remember his famous bonfire night scoffs during those years.

He had a love for travel, an avid hunter, fisherman, woodsman, and outdoor enthusiast who built or borrowed a cabin wherever he decided to visit on the rock. He flew into, ATV'd on, or snowmobiled over Newfoundland's interior, and even took an open boat from Lewisporte to Labrador on one of his visits to that formidable coast. A brotherly friendship that has lasted a lifetime, Woodrow, Goodyear, and Bill were affectionately called beauty, brains, and brawn, in that order as partners in sometime questionable antics which has bonded them for life.

Bill spent 63 years of his life in and around Lewisporte and Brown's Arm, where he was well-known and active in the community. He served in the Lion's Club, was a founding member of the Kinsmen, a Mason in the Masonic Lodge,and a member of the Lewisporte Town Council.

His love of the sea and Notre Dame Bay firmly rooted him in the Lewisporte area, as the Chaulk family roots were planted in Stanhope during the heyday of the Labrador fishery. He started running a charter Bluefin Tuna boat (John B) in the 1970s and early 80s.

Bill was an avid boater for most of his life, and could be found on the Bay during the boating season on one of his many boats, accompanied by his first mate Sally.

He lived his life with a firm resolve and will always be remembered for the warmest of smiles.

A Celebration of Life will take place from The Salvation Army Church, Lewisporte on Tuesday, July 15th at 2 PM. Interment to follow at The Salvation Army Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lionel Kelland Hospice, Grand Falls Windsor or Daffodil House, St. John's are gratefully accepted.
