Obituary

Wendy Anne Callaghan, fifth of nine children born to James Callaghan of Prince Edward Island and May Callaghan (nee Pirie of Scotland), passed away peacefully at home on Sunday the twentieth of October, 2025, aged 73 years. She was predeceased by three husbands and a son – Bob Airey, David Thompson, Al James, and James Cook respectively – and is survived by three children – Susan Airey (Brian), Alethea Thompson (Lindy), and Graham Thompson.

She will be remembered for her laugh and her love of flowers, and the love that she showed her four grandsons – Zachary, James, Desmond and Dorman - as well her large circle of friends and family. Many memories were made sitting around the kitchen table and Wendy was always a support for her children and their friends as well as many a young person in need of an honorary mother. Her support for the rights of women and her political activism for LGBT was a constant theme in her life.

Wendy was a woman who enjoyed new experiences, living in many places throughout her lifetime. Her childhood was spent in Blakeny, Ottawa and Oakville and her adulthood took her from Toronto to Hamilton, Lanark, Perth, Fort McMurray and back. She spent the last chapter of her life in Newfoundland, never stopping the learning that brought her joy.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering will be held in Cobourg, Ontario on November 22, 2025, with internment of her ashes at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Lewisporte, NL.
