Obituary

Due to high winds and no ferry, Funeral that was scheduled for today will now go ahead tomorrow, Sunday, January 18h at 1 PM.

Passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026 in Random Island, Mrs. Velma Brinson, aged 79 years of Change Islands, NL.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilson; her parents, George and Blanche (Marita) Powell; brother, George Powell; brother-in-law, Raymond Heath.
Left to mourn her passing with fond and loving memories are her children, Everett (Cynthia), Ellen, Evan (Tiffany); grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Brandon), Reannah (Ben), Isaiah (Grace), Noah (Emma), Wilson, Rose, Jordan (Morgan), Zachary, Aaron (Megan) and Rachael (Josh); great-granddaughter, Adeline; her sister, Phyllis; her brothers, Francis (Maxine), Dave (Georgina); sister-in-law, Janie, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Velma was born on June 7th, 1946 to George and Marita (Blanche) Powell, the third out of four children.

Velma grew up in Red Rod Cove, Change Islands always surrounded by a large circle of family and friends. Outdoor activities filled her childhood, she spent her time exploring and getting into mischief. On April 19th, 1965 she married the love of her life Wilson. Together they raised three children who blessed them with eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. She loved them all dearly.

Velma was a loving, beautiful, caring, strong, independent woman who enjoyed everyone who came into her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, berry picking, trying new things, going on adventures and hosting a fine lunch or meal when anyone came to visit.

Velma would always tell everyone in her presence that she loved them.

The public visitation will take place from St. Margaret's Anglican Church, Change Islands, NL on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 7PM-9PM and Friday, January 16, 2026 at 2PM-4PM & 7PM-9PM.

The Funeral Service will take place from the St. Margaret's Anglican Church, Change Islands, NL on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at 1PM. The interment to follow at the St. Margaret's Anglican Cemetery, Change Islands, NL.

As expressions of sympathy, flowers or donations to Anglican Church, Change Islands will be gratefully accepted.
