Obituary

It is with sadness that the family of the late Phyllis Bernice Luff announces her passing at her residence in Lewisporte, NL aged 74 years.

Phyllis leaves to mourn her son, Brian (Nadine), grandchildren, Destiny, Kailey, Brandon; brothers, Reginald (Doris), Robert (Doris), Carl (Gloria), & Scott (Mary); brother-in-law, Sidney (Ted) Mercer; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; homecare provider & friend, Karyn Etheridge.

Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Harvey Luff; parents, Joseph & Emma Mercer; sister, Margaret; brothers, Thomas (Lillian), & Gerald (Mildred); parents-in-law, Ben and Winnie Luff.  Left to mourn sisters-in-law, Grace, Doris (Frank), Marilyn (Roger), and brothers-in-law, Guy (Linda), Clifford (Venus).

Phyllis was born to Joseph and Emma Mercer on January 1, 1948 and grew up in Port Albert, NL,  Phyllis completed grade 8 in Port Albert, the highest grade that could be completed at that school.  Her dream was to become a teacher.  At the age of 16 she moved to Lewisporte to complete her high school education which was the requirement at the time for teaching, and Phyllis embarked on her career in Deer Lake at the age of 18.  Phyllis went back to Memorial University of Newfoundland to further her education, and  in 1987 and 1989 she received her Bachelor of Arts in Education degree and Bachelor of Arts degree respectively.  She married the love of her life (and ours!) on July 11, 1969.  In August 1970 her son Brian, in whom she had much pride and delight, was born.  On July 11, 1998 Brian married Nadine. With this marriage came Destiny in 2000, Kailey in 2003 and Brandon in 2007 all her pride and joy.  In addition to her passion as an educator  Phyllis had many things that brought her joy.  They included family gatherings, time with friends, travelling, a good board game, and a game of cards(especially when she was winning!).  Phyllis was very active in her community.  She was treasurer of Loon Bay Camp, Central Treasurer of the Stoneville-(Port Albert)- Change Islands Pastoral Charge, and a member of the Port Albert UCW,  Phyllis lost her battle with cancer on May 4, 2022 at the age of 74 and passed peacefully away at  home.  She will be greatly missed by her family and a large circle of friends,  Everyone who knew her loved her.

The public visitation will take place Friday, May 6, 2022 at 2-4 & 7-9 PM from Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Lewisporte, NL.

The funeral service will take place, Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 2 pm from the United Church, Port Albert, NL with Rev. Calvin Ginn officiating. The interment will follow at the United Church Cemetery, Port Albert, NL.

Please note the family is requesting that masks be worn to attend the funeral service.

As expressions of sympathy, donations in her memory may be made to the Loon Bay United Church Camps.
