It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mr. Lawrence Dorman Penney of Lewisporte, NL, at the Lewisporte Health Centre on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born on January 28, 1938, in Twillingate, Lawrence was raised in Herring Neck. On July 20, 1960, he married the love of his life, Marina Stuckey of Pike's Arm, in Herring Neck. Shortly after, in August of 1960, they made their home in Lewisporte, where together they built a life and raised their two daughters, Diane and Goldie.

Lawrence began his working life at just 16 years old with CN Marine. Not long after, he proudly purchased the very first car in Herring Neck. Over the years, he worked on many CN vessels, beginning as a steward and eventually becoming a chief steward, a position he held until his retirement on July 22, 1995.

He had a deep love for the outdoors and the water. Boating, fishing, quadding, and especially time spent at his cabin in Indian Arm brought him great joy throughout his life.

Lawrence was a proud and dedicated member of the SUF in Herring Neck and later the Loyal Orange Lodge in Lewisporte.

He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Bessie Penney; his beloved daughter, Goldie Reid; son-in-law, Barry Budden; and sister-in-law, Audrey Hoddinott.

Leaving to mourn with cherished memories are his devoted wife of 65 years, Marina; daughter Diane Budden; grandchildren Dennis Budden, Keith Budden, Whitney (Blaine) Compton, and Rebecca (Aaron) White; great-grandchildren Cruz Budden, Peyton Compton, Casey White, and Luke Compton; brother-in-law Cyril Hoddinott; along with a large circle of extended family and friends.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to his extended family at Pleasantview Manor for the care, compassion, and kindness shown to Lawrence over the years. Special thanks are also extended to the doctors, nurses, and staff in Gander and Lewisporte for their care during his final days. To Rev. Paula Gale and Rev. Art Elliott, thank you for your support, guidance, and for being by Lawrence's side.

Cremation has taken place. Public visitation will be held at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, Lewisporte, NL on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 from 2-4PM & 7-9PM.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Matthew's United Church, Main Street, Lewisporte, NL on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 1PM with inurnment to follow at St. Matthew's Cemetery, Stanhope Road, Lewisporte.
