It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Gordon William Day, age 81 years, of Lewisporte, NL on Thursday, June 15, 2023 after a brief battle with cancer.

Gordon was predeceased by his parents Caleb & Tryphena Day and his brother Morley James Day. Gordon leaves to mourn, with a lifetime of wonderful memories, his wife and best friend of 53 years, Helen Day (nee Dwyer), his daughters Susan Day (Roger Gillard), Joanne Day (Darren Johnson), grandchildren (David Gillard; Caleb, Hannah, and Oliver Johnson) and his close cousin Verna Cluett of Garnish.  He also leaves a large circle of cherished friends and a close knit extended family including sisters-in-law Maureen (Gerald) Dwyer, Clara (Lloyd) Fudge, Anita Diamond, Millie (Glen Mews) Woolfrey, brothers-in-law Leo Dwyer, Chris (Heather) Dwyer, Tony (Connie) Dwyer as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Michael Dwyer.

Gordon was born in Garnish, Newfoundland, on March 21, 1942. At 16 years old he left home to attend Memorial University in St. John's to study teaching. He taught in various communities across Newfoundland before moving to Grand Falls in 1968 where he met his future wife Helen. They married in 1970. He obtained his Master's Degree in Education in 1975 and relocated to Lewisporte in the same year. In Lewisporte he held positions as teacher, vice-principal and principal at the Junior High School and later the High School until he retired in 1994. During his teaching career he influenced the lives of many students and fellow teachers and was active in the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association. After retiring from teaching, Gordon started his second career as a business owner, opening Veronica's Greenhouse with his wife Helen which they operated until 2012.

Gordon was an active member of the community, serving with many groups including the 1990 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games, Lewisporte Town Council, the Lion's Club, Lewisporte Chamber of Commerce, Gander Airport Authority, Canada Blooms, and Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture.

Gordon was the foundation of his family. He and Helen built a loving home for their two daughters and their eventual families. Gordon took great joy in participating in the lives of his grandchildren, following their many sports and activities.  He also formed close relationships with his two sons-in-law Roger and Darren. Gordon loved to connect with people and always took an interest in their lives. Gordon cherished the time spent with the people he loved in his homes in Lewisporte, Indian Arm and Tilting.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, with a special thank you to Dr. Paulus and Nurse Riley.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will take place at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, Lewisporte, NL on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 11 AM. Interment will take place at a later date.
