Gilbert Owen
Layte
Sep 3, 1929 — Jun 16, 2025
Passed away on June 16th, 2025 at the Lewisporte Health Care Center, Mr. Gilbert Layte at the age of 95 yrs.
Gilbert was born on Sept. 3, 1929 to Edith and Arthur Layte. He married the love of his life Joyce Wheeler of Tizzard's Hr. on Jan. 30, 1952. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren.
He worked at Woolfrey's Lower Store as a meat cutter and Notre Dame Dairies.
In his younger days, Gilbert enjoyed playing hockey and became a devoted maple leafs fan. He loved moose hunting and boil-ups in the woods. Dad and mom loved berry picking especially blueberries and would spend their days out picking berries. He also loved his card games. Back in the day, you would often find a rousing game of 120's on the go in the shed. In later years it would be Skip-Bo with Joyce who was his constant companion. They were in separable and it broke his heart when she fell and broke her hip, only to be hospitalized and later moved to Lakeside. Gilbert was also a great storyteller and could come up with a ditty at the drop of a hat. He had a wonderful sense of humor.
He was predeceased by his mother, Edith and father, Arthur; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred (Lena), Harold (Daisy), Carl (Barb); sisters and brothers-in-law, Effie (Hans) Kavli, Winnifred ( Harry) Thorne, Ella (Tom) Snow, Gertrude Layte, Melba (Earl) Croft and Vera (Wilfred) Mercer.
Left to mourn his passing with fond and loving memories are his loving wife, Joyce; his 3 sons, Owen (Sally), Barry (Franca), Robert; 3 daughters, Betty (Frank) Stratton, Linda Combden, Debra (Victor) Foss; 8 grandchildren, Sheri, Christopher, Lisa, Lori, Julia, Philip, Amanda and Shane; 7 great-grandchildren, Lily, Lucy, Kaylie, Victoria, Zachary, Eden, and Sadie; as well as extended family and friends.
