Obituary

Passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, NL,  Mrs. Elsie Lacey, aged 94 years.

Elsie was born in Tizzard's Harbour, the youngest of a family of 5 boys and 2 girls. After she completed grade 11, she moved away from home and married Gordon Lacey from Exploits. They moved to Lewisporte about 75 years ago where they built the very first house on Pine Avenue, raising their 8 sons and residing there until her passing this Wednesday at 5:05 PM as one of her granddaughters held her hand and sang "Silent Night" to her.

Elsie was a well respected and well known resident of Lewisporte, NL. She volunteered in many capacities through the years – the Parent Teacher Association, the League of Mercy, catering many meals, the Home League, organizing lunches for funerals, the Tuesday morning Prayer Group, and so many other groups.  She spent over 40 years in Youth Ministry at the Salvation Army Lewisporte.

She helped many in her lifetime. She had an active ministry of caring for others including her phone ministry and prayer ministry and sending thousands of cards to those who were sick, bereaved or had birthdays as well as countless thank you cards, Christmas cards and encouragement cards.

Elsie always remembered to thank those who helped her in any way by giving them a cash gift, gift cards, knitted items or some of her famous baked goods.

Her family thanks all of her well loved friends who were there for her when they couldn't be. Thank you to all the corps officers through the past years, especially to Lieutenants Devin and Laurie Reid, her present corps officers for their care and visits at the hospital.

Special thanks to one of her granddaughters, Sarah Rowsell (Registered Nurse) for her countless hours giving her Nan exceptional end of life care.

Thank you all. You are loved and appreciated more than words can say.

She is predeceased by her husband, Gordon; parents, Jacob and Mary Ann Jenkins; son, Bruce; two baby boys; 5 brothers and 1 sister.

Left to mourn her passing with fond and loving memories are her sons, Ben (Marion), Jim (Joan), Roy (Jean), Major Harry (Major Marina), Bill (Nancy), Brian (Joanne), Major Gerald (Major Doreen); daughter-in-law, Winona; 20 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; special nieces & nephews; as well as a large circle of family and friends.
