Eldon was born August 4, 1926 to Dorcas and Simeon Sheppard of Indian Islands. Eldon married Marie Kinden of Stag Harbour and they were married for 66 years. Eldon and Marie made Embree, NL their home until they moved into White Pine Cottages in Lewisporte, NL about ten years ago. They had one son, Barry.
Eldon entered the teaching profession in 1945 at Horse Islands, NL. From there he taught at Miles Cove, NL, Samson's Island, NL and for 33 years at Embree, NL. He retired in 1983 after 36 years of dedicated service as a teacher-principal.
In 1967 Eldon received the Governor General of Canada Canadian Centennial Medal, in recognition of valuable service to the country. In 1978 he received the Canadian Merit Award in recognition of distinguished service and leadership in the teaching profession.
After a brief illness Eldon passed away at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, NL on December 9, 2019.
Eldon was predeceased by his loving wife, Marie (November 8, 2019); his parents, Dorcas and Simeon Sheppard; sisters, Leta (Collins) and Alva (Foss) and brothers, Otto and Watson. Left to mourn with so many wonderful memories are his son, Barry (Lynda); grandchildren, Greg (Cynthia) and Becky (Sheldon); great-grandchildren, Meredith, Ian, Naomi, Zach and Tanner; sisters-in-law, Ada Sheppard, Alice Sharpe and Betty Kinden as well as several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.
Many thanks are extended to the caring and compassionate doctors and staff at the Health Sciences Centre.
Visitation will take place at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, Lewisporte, NL on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 from 2-5 PM & 7-9 PM.
The funeral service will take place from Philadelphia Pentecostal Tabernacle, Lewisporte, NL on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at 11 AM.
The interment will follow at the Pentecostal Cemetery, Lewisporte, NL.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Gideon Bible Society will be gratefully accepted.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Lewisporte, NL.
