Passed peacefully away in the palliative care unit at North Haven Manor in his home town of almost 70 years, Earl Brown of Lewisporte.

Earl was predeceased by his parents John and Bertha Brown; siblings Don (Theresa), Louise (Jim), Ken (Jan), Harvey; daughter Brenda; son-in-law Des.

Left with fond and loving memories are his devoted wife of 67 years, Ruby Brown; daughter Sheila (Scott); son Don (Nadine); sister-in-law Candace; granddaughters, Stephanie (Zane), Allison, Campbell and Claire; grandson Kennedy;  great-grandsons, Niall and Harrison.  In addition to his immediate family, Earl will be fondly remembered by a close circle of family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

Earl was born and raised in the resettled community of Tack's Beach on King's Island in Placencia Bay and was the oldest of five children. At the age of 14 he began fishing full time with his father to support his siblings who he remained close with all through his life and those bonds were a great source of joy to him. Later in his life he, along with his brothers, became something of a historian on Tack's Beach and enjoyed telling stories of life there and of the people who populated his childhood memories.

Earl spent several summer months logging in Millertown where he became a bit of a legend as one of the best loggers in Newfoundland. On the advice of his father, he relocated to Lewisporte with his parents and two youngest brothers in 1955. At the age of 27 he began employment with CN at the shipping wharf as well as being a full time fisherman. In 1958, he met and married Ruby Snow. The two were blessed with three children, Brenda, Sheila and Don.

Earl was a dedicated family man and his family was his greatest source of pride and joy. He loved the outdoors and he delighted in passing on his knowledge as an outdoorsman to his children and later his grandchildren and even his great grandchildren. He also valued community and was a proud volunteer firefighter and fought many significant fires over the years.

When not working, he enjoyed his favorite pastime, more work! Whether it was fishing in his boat, hunting with friends, off on the skidoo to cut wood or, in later years, looking after the garden at the cabin, rest was not on the agenda!

Even in retirement, he kept a busy daily schedule, going in the woods every morning, returning home to a well prepared lunch, courtesy of Ruby, and then going back out again to cut more wood for the winter.

At the age of 90, Earl became ill and spent his very first night in hospital. Up to that day, he was active and healthy enough to enjoy all the things he loved - hunting, fishing, and cutting wood. The rarity of such a blessing is not lost on his family. This was made possible in large part by his sheer will, determination, a few close friends with similar interests, but also by the woman who loved him dearly, Ruby. Her attentive and loving care made his long and healthy life possible. We are quite certain that no other man on earth was quite as well looked after as he was by his exceptional wife Ruby, who at the age of 86 herself, still made sure to rub his feet every night before bed.

A man of few words, Earl was a quiet, thoughtful, hardworking and deliberate man who didn't suffer fools. Though he did not speak of it until he was nearly 80, he was very proud of his three children and the truly outstanding people they all became… and they of him. He has left a legacy of strength, hard work, determination, joy in the simple things, and pleasant solitude. His family are forever grateful for his long and very full life.

His family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of the emergency department and orthopedic unit at James Peyton Memorial Regional Health Centre in Gander as well as the Palliative Care Unit at North Haven Manor in Lewisporte. A warm and heartfelt thanks goes out to the staff of Kingsway in Lewisporte where Earl and Ruby have resided for the past seven years. Your kindness and care was a great source of comfort to our family and will never be forgotten.

Family will be receiving friends at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Lewisporte, NL on Thursday, April 10th, 2025 between the hours of 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm.

The funeral service will take place from The Anglican Church, Lewisporte, NL on Saturday, April 12th at 2:00 pm.
