Passed peacefully away on Monday, February 9, 2026 at North Haven Manor, Lewisporte, NL, Mrs. Bertha Prior, aged 93 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald; parents, Edward and Janet Hillier; siblings, Charles, Margaret (Jacob Mullins), Lenora (William Crowley).
Left to mourn her passing with fond and loving memories are her children, Wanda (Gerald), Kaye (Barry); grandchildren, Jay (Jess), Meredith (David), Robert (Nena); great- grandchildren, Kolbie, Julia, Bentley, Madeline, and Charles; sister-in-law, Grace; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bertha was born and raised in Fortune. At sixteen she went to St. John's to further her education at Memorial University College. She then started a thirty-five year teaching career which always gave her great satisfaction and she was delighted when she met any former students. Upon retirement she took up painting as a hobby and became quite good at it. All family members have her artwork proudly displayed in their homes.
She and Reg married in 1956 and resided in a number of communities in Newfoundland while raising their family. Family was always a priority. She dearly loved travelling to visit with them or their visits to her. She always participated in family gatherings, which included great meals, various games, cards and lots of laughter and jokes. Her smile and laugh were contagious.
The family would like to thank the staff of North Haven Manor for their love and care to Bertha in her last years.
In keeping with her wishes cremation has taken place.
The funeral service will take place from Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Lewisporte NL on Thursday, February 12,2026 at 1PM. Inurnment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Lewisporte, NL.
As expressions of sympathy donations can be made to The Gathering Place or Lionel Kelland Hospice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Lewisporte, NL.
